From 1 July 2007, the Australian Government will provide financial support for mid-career Australians (aged 30 years or more) to upgrade their skills through an Australian Apprenticeship in a trade experiencing a skill shortage.
The objective of the Support for Mid-Career Apprentices initiative is to encourage more Australians 30 and over to undertake a trade apprenticeship by providing additional financial incentives. The payment is made to either the employer or the Australian Apprentice (depending on industrial arrangements) and will be set at $150 per week ($7,800 per annum) in the first year and $100 per week ($5,200 per annum) in the second year or until completion if this occurs within the first two years.
