Eligible employers were those who employed an Australian Apprentice (apprentice or trainee) between 1 January 2009 and 31 January 2010. Group Training Organisations were ineligible, however, Host Employers could apply. To encourage diversity and best practice, winners of the 2009 Minister’s Awards for Excellence were ineligible to enter the 2010 Awards.

Selection panels are convened in each of the 22 Australian Apprenticeships Support Services regions throughout Australia and comprise representatives from DEEWR and industry. Three finalists from each region are selected. From the three finalists, one regional winner is chosen and invited to attend the presentation ceremony and dinner where the Australian Government Minister (or their representative) will present their award.
Each winner is invited to send three representatives from their organisation to the presentation event, one of which is to be an Australian Apprentice. Flights, accommodation and meal costs for the three representatives are met by DEEWR.
The two runners up for each region are also invited to the event and receive two complimentary tickets to the presentation ceremony and dinner. All other costs, including flights, accommodation and meals, are at the expense of the runners-up.
The application round for the 2010 Minister’s Awards for Excellence for Employers of Australian Apprentices is now closed.
DEEWR will notify all 2010 applicants, either by email or letter, of the status of their application by no later than 16 June 2010.

What are employers of Australian Apprentices doing to achieve standards of excellence? Recent feedback from organisations that applied for the 2009 Minister’s Awards for Excellence for Employers of Australian Apprenticeships indicated that there was great interest in what organisations are doing in the workplace to achieve excellent standards of training and support for employees.
As a way to share this best practice, the following applications from winning employers demonstrate the processes and programs that have been initiated to provide positive outcomes for both the employer and Australian Apprentices.
The applications have been edited to ensure anonymity. Applications from a range of industry sectors, organisational sizes and structures have been included.
