Australian Government Assistance Available for Australian Apprentices
The Australian Government supports Australian Apprentices and their employers
with a system of financial incentives to encourage employers to offer employment
related training opportunities that will encourage people, especially young
people, to acquire and expand their working skills and, as a result, set
themselves towards worthwhile careers.
Anyone of working age can be considered for an Australian Apprenticeship.
However, not everyone will be eligible to attract Australian Government
incentives or other assistance to undertake an Australian Apprenticeship.
Eligibility of individuals to undertake an Australian Apprenticeship should be
discussed with an Australian Apprenticeships
Centre.
Eligible Australian Apprentices are able to apply for the following
assistance:

Living Away From Home Allowance - is available to Australian Apprentices
of any age who in the first three years of their training have to live away
from home to take up or remain in their apprenticeship or training.

Disabled Australian Apprentices Wage Support and tutorial support for the off-the-job
training
- Youth Allowance
- is available to eligible Australian Apprentices aged between 16 and 24
- Austudy -
is available to eligible Australian Apprentices aged 25 and over
- ABSTUDY - is
available for Australian Apprentices who are Indigenous Australians of any
age
- Commonwealth Trade
Learning Scholarships - under this initiative, a $1,000 tax-free
scholarship is paid to eligible Australian Apprentices with half paid at the
end of the first year and the remainder at the end of the second year of
their training.
- Tools For Your
Trade Initiative this initiative provides up to $800 to employers to
purchase a kit of tools for eligible Australian Apprentices. After nine
months of training for the same employer, the apprentice gets to keep the
tool kit
- Wage Support -
Australian Apprentices under 30 years in their first and second years of an
apprenticeship in a trade experiencing skills shortages may be eligible to
receive the $2,000 tax-free Apprenticeship Wage Top-Up payment. Workers
aged 30 years or over when they begin an apprenticeship in a trade
experiencing a skill shortage may also be eligible for financial assistance

Training (Fee) Vouchers -
Australian Apprentices undertaking apprenticeships in trades
experiencing a skills shortage may be eligible to apply for a training (fee)
voucher of up to $500 per year for each of their first and second years to
claim reimbursement of course fees already paid.
