Budget announcements supporting Australian Apprenticeships
The Australian Government has announced new streamlined
measures supporting Australian Apprenticeships in the 2009-10 Budget.
These initiatives will support employers to take on and retain Australian
Apprenticeships and will ensure Australia’s skills base is protected and
maintained.
Changes to Fast Track Apprenticeships program announced
The Australian Government has announced changes to the Fast Track
Apprenticeships program though the 2009-10 Budget. This Budget measure
refocuses the current small grant arrangements and replaces them with a more
expansive demonstration and brokerage program that trials, evaluates and
disseminates information on best practice accelerated apprenticeships over the
next four years.
Changes to the Group Training in the Trades Program
The Australian Government has announced changes to the Group Training in the Trades Program in the 2009 – Budget.
The 2008 Australian Apprenticeships Roundtable Report is a culmination of work undertaken by members of the Roundtable that investigated issues impacting apprentices and trainees in Australia today.
The Australian Government has released two initiatives to support Australian Apprentices.
The $145.6 million Securing Australian Apprenticeships initiative will support out-of-trade Australian Apprentices to remain connected to the workforce.

The Securing Australian Apprenticeships Through Registered Training Organisations initiative will allow Australian Apprentices, who have lost their jobs to continue their off-the-job training with their Registered Training Organisation.

The 2008 Australian Apprenticeships Roundtable presented their work to the Ministerial Council of Vocational Training and Education (MCVTE) and the VET sector in Darwin.
On 14 November 2008, the Master
Builder’s Association (MBA) held its annual National Apprentice of the Year
Awards.
Andrew George from New South Wales won the prestigious award for 2008, with Luke Tennant from Victoria receiving a Special Commendation.
Effective from 1 January 2009 new arrangements are in place to assist Australian Apprentices with disability and their employers when they claim Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support and Assistance for Tutorial, Interpreter and Mentor Services. The new arrangements apply to Australian Apprentices who have a current and valid Job Capacity Assessment. Find out more
On 4 September, the Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, presented awards to winners of the 2008 Minister's Awards for Excellence at a gala event held in Canberra.
Finalists of the Ministers Awards for Excellence for Commitment to Australian Apprenticeships, and the Ministers Awards for Excellence for Professional Support Services have been announced. Three finalists have been chosen from each category to attend the Minister’s Awards presentation dinner at Parliament House, Canberra on Thursday 4 September 2008.
The first Australian Apprenticeships Roundtable meeting for 2008 was held in Canberra from 2 to 4 June 2008.

The new Australian Youth Forum announced by the Hon Kate Ellis MP, Minister for Youth, on 17 March 2008 is open for consultation for your views and ideas on how you want to have a voice to Government.
The new Forum replaces the former National Youth Roundtable and will be broader in scope allowing young people to participate in government policy development and decision making.

Centre (EmployNET), will cease
operation under the Australian Apprenticeships Support Services Contract
2006-2009 as of close of business Wednesday 26 September 2007.
2007/2008 funding for fast-track apprenticeships
The call for Expressions of Interest from Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to develop and implement ‘fast-tack apprenticeships’ is now closed. The Department of Education, Science and Training have now commenced evaluation of proposals.
New National Skills Needs List replaces Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL)
The Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) was replaced on 1 July 2007 by the National Skills Needs List (NSNL). The new list of trade occupations is based on research conducted by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and is maintained by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).

Hobart’s Australian Apprenticeships Centre, trading as The Apprenticeships
Specialists, will cease operation under the Australian Apprenticeships Support

Skills at work - Evaluation of New Apprenticeships
This report presents the key findings from the Skills at work Evaluation of New Apprenticeships. The evaluation was designed to examine the effectiveness of New Apprenticeships from an Australian Government perspective and compares arrangements before and after the introduction of New Apprenticeships. The evaluation identified growth in New Apprenticeships as being highly responsive and relevant to industry need.
